The Sikh Freedom Movement pertains to the separation of Punjab as an independent and truly democratic nation. The Sikhs and minorities at large have been persecuted, tortured, and treated as second class citizen as members of the largest self-proclaimed democracy in the world. The website does not intend to spark hatred or violence between any communities but to exercise universal religious and political freedoms.
Anandpur Sahib Resolution
One may ask instead of setting Punjab as an independent nation why not resolve any grievances through the Indian political system? In the late 1970s and early 1980s Sikhs in fact formalized their requests in a document known as the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. The Anandpur Sahib Resolution contained religious demands along with greater autonomy for Punjab.
Religious Requests
Among the religious requests in the Anandpur Sahib Resolution were that the Golden Temple in Amritsar (the holiest of Sikh shrines) be equipped with radio transmitters so Sikhs at large could listen to religious hymns sung there. The other major religious demand was for Amritsar to be declared a holy city and forbidding the sale of alcohol and tobacco around the complex. Let it be noted, Haridwar a city of religious significance for Hindus has such restrictions. Such religious demands should not be an issue to grant.
Political Requests
The political requests in the Anandpur Sahib Resolution included fair restructuring of Punjabs boundaries on the basis of languages being spoken, where a village would be treated as a unit. Punjab and the state of Haryana today share the capitol of Chandigarh which was requested to be allotted to Punjab. In general a system of governance similar to that of modern countries, such as the United States or Canada, whereby control is vested to the states and departments such as defense, foreign affairs, etc be handled by the federal government was requested.
Sikh Freedom Movement
When these requests were made forth to the Indian government they branded backers of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution as terrorists and a media backlash was started against the Sikhs as being anti-national elements. Bear in mind these were the same Sikhs who made the largest contribution to independence from the British and played the biggest role in battles and wars on behalf of India. The Indian government hatched a plan to suppress and take a blow to the psyche of Sikhs and orchestrated an attack on their holiest shrine the Golden Temple in 1984 codenamed Operation Bluestar. During Operation Bluestar hundreds of Sikhs are massacred at the hands of the Indian army, some shot in the head at point blank range whilst their hands were tied behind their backs with their own turbans.
